A routine pediatric dental cleaning is designed for prevention, meaning its purpose is to keep your child’s mouth and teeth healthy during their essential developmental years. Oral health concerns, such as cavities in primary (baby) teeth, can impact the alignment, structure, and condition of the permanent teeth developing beneath the gums. While daily brushing and flossing at home are essential for maintaining good oral hygiene, they may not effectively remove all bacteria, especially from hard-to-reach areas.
How often does my child need a pediatric dental cleaning?
For children with healthy mouths and excellent home care, our doctors typically recommend a cleaning every six (6) months. If your child is more prone to dental issues, our doctors may prescribe more frequent cleanings to remove bacteria buildup and monitor their oral health.
Children and teenagers undergoing orthodontic treatment may also benefit from more frequent cleanings. Braces and clear aligners can create an environment where bacteria grow more quickly, and the brackets or attachments make it harder to fully clean the teeth. This could compromise their dental health, and in some cases, may require pausing orthodontic treatment until the teeth and dental health are restored.
