Anxiety Relief Sedation Options
Visiting the dentist can feel overwhelming or frightening for many people, especially those who have had difficult past experiences. At Merrimack Smiles, we understand these fears and how they can make each appointment feel daunting. We’ve had the honor of caring for numerous patients with severe dental anxiety or phobia. Through a combination of our conscious sedation options and the compassionate care of our team, these patients now complete their visits comfortably.
We always personalize our approach to match your level of anxiety because we believe the key to easing dental fear is building trust. We take the time to educate you—both verbally and visually—about your health and the steps we will take moving forward, helping you feel more informed and empowered. It’s truly rewarding for us when patients who once felt anxious can visit our office without fear, thanks to the positive, calming experiences they’ve had with our team.
For those who need extra support, we offer two conscious sedation options: nitrous oxide or oral sedation medication. Our goal is to make sure you feel safe, cared for, and at ease throughout your dental journey. Your comfort is our priority, and we’ll support you every step of the way.
What is nitrous oxide?
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as “Happy Gas” or “Laughing Gas,” is a safe and effective sedative that you inhale to experience deep relaxation. It’s a colorless, sweet-smelling, non-irritating gas that helps make dental care quicker, safer, and more comfortable.
Nitrous oxide works well in reducing anxiety, fear, and nervousness during dental procedures. While it provides light sedation, you remain fully conscious and able to follow directions throughout your treatment. One of the key benefits is its quick onset and adjustability, along with a rapid recovery time. The gas reaches your brain within 20 seconds, and relaxation usually begins within two to three minutes.
Though nitrous oxide acts as a mild painkiller, its effects vary from person to person, so local anesthesia may still be used to numb the treatment area once you’re comfortable.
What is oral sedation medication?
Oral sedation medication, part of the benzodiazepine family, is commonly prescribed to people who experience anxiety or phobias. Our doctors will provide a prescription for this medication based on the dosage needed for your specific dental procedure.
Oral sedation is highly effective at reducing anxiety, fear, and tension. It often makes you feel groggy, and you may even fall asleep, though you’ll still be able to communicate and respond to prompts. Compared to nitrous oxide, oral sedation offers a deeper level of calmness while keeping you conscious and aware.
Though oral sedation may provide some pain relief, this effect varies between individuals. As a result, local anesthesia may still be used for added comfort. You’ll take the medication before your appointment to allow it time to take effect, and the sedation will last after your procedure, so it’s important to arrange for someone to drive you to and from your appointment.
